10 simple ways to reduce household waste
Small habits that cut what goes in the bin, from shopping to repairs.
Less waste means emptier bins, lower costs and less going to landfill. None of these take much effort.
- Cut single-use plastic. Reusable bags, bottles and food boxes replace a surprising amount.
- Compost food and garden waste. It is a big share of most bins and makes good soil.
- Recycle properly. Clean, dry and in the right bin. Check your council’s list.
- Buy in bulk. Less packaging per meal. Refill shops help with dry goods.
- Go paperless. Bills, statements and tickets on your phone.
- Repair before replacing. Furniture, clothes and small appliances can often be fixed cheaply.
- Donate or sell. Charity shops and local selling groups take usable furniture and household goods.
- Use cloths instead of paper towels. Wash and reuse.
- Avoid over-packaged products. Choose loose fruit and veg and products with recyclable packaging.
- Clear out regularly. A garage or loft that is cleared once a year never becomes a full house clearance.
Clearing out anyway?
