What to do when your bins are not emptied

Why it happens, how to report it, and what to do with the extra rubbish in the meantime.

You put the bins out and they are still full the next morning. It happens to everyone eventually. Here is what to do.

  1. Check the basics. Collection days shift around bank holidays. Check your council’s website for the current schedule, and that the bin was out by the right time in the usual place.
  2. Look for a tag or sticker. Crews often leave a note if a bin was too full, blocked in or had the wrong things in it.
  3. Report it. Most councils have an online form. Give your address, which bin was missed and anything that might explain it.
  4. Store the extra safely. Bag it securely, keep it away from pests and sort out recycling so the general bin does not overflow.
  5. Prevent repeats. Put bins out the night before, replace a damaged bin and keep to the council’s rules on what goes where.

If the rubbish has built up beyond what the next collection will take, or you have had a clear-out, we can collect the extra in one visit.
